A funeral, a ghost, a murder . . . It's all in a day's work for Emma Lee Raines . . .
Bopped on the head from a falling plastic Santa, local undertaker Emma Lee Raines is told she's suffering from “funeral trauma.” It's trauma all right, because the not-so-dearly departed keep talking to her. Take Ruthie Sue Payne—innkeeper, gossip queen, and arch-nemesis of Emma Lee's granny—she's adamant that she didn't just fall down those stairs. She was pushed.
Ruthie has no idea who wanted her pushing up daisies. All she knows is that she can't cross over until the matter is laid to eternal rest. In the land of the living, Emma Lee's high-school crush, Sheriff Jack Henry Ross, isn't ready to rule out foul play. Granny Raines, the widow of Ruthie's ex-husband and co-owner of the Sleepy Hollow Inn, is the prime suspect. Now Emma Lee is stuck playing detective or risk being haunted forever.
A Ghostly Undertaking by Tonya Kappes is the first book in the Ghostly Southern Mysteries series. I absolutely loved it!! Tonya does a wonderful job in bringing us an awesome new setting and characters in a fun new series. I was pulled in right from the beginning. Emma Lee Raines was entertaining and just fun to get to know. She’s a funeral director who has the unfortunate newfound ability to talk to ghosts. When Ruthie Sue Payne shows up at her own visitation and starts talking to Emma Lee, I knew I was in for a treat. Ruthie Sue is relentless, funny and wildly entertaining. She knew she was murdered and she wants Emma Lee to find out who did it.
Emma Lee is not the brightest character but she does work on honing her instincts and writing things down to try to work out the mystery throughout the story. While I did guess ‘whodunit’ earlier than the end of the book, I was still entertained the whole way through. I liked getting to know Emma Lee and Sheriff Jack Henry Ross, and I can’t wait to see where their relationship heads. I really enjoyed the setting of Sleepy Hollow, Kentucky, and I can’t wait to go back there again. I am definitely looking forward to my next laugh-out-loud mystery with Emma Lee and the gang in Sleepy Hollow.

Sounds like a fun read.

This sounds like a fun book. Just what trouble can someone get into other that being bopped on the head by a plastic Santa?
