Fast Five with Bruce Robert Coffin
Hi, Bruce! Thank you so much for stopping by Brooke Blogs today. I am thrilled to have you here today to answer some interview questions. Congratulations on your newest release, Beyond the Truth!
1) What does a typical day look like for you? Do you write every day?
Let me begin by saying that it is a pleasure to be here with you and your readers. Thank you for the invitation.
I’m not sure whether you’d consider any of my days typical. My day begins as soon as my brain kicks in, sometimes that’s earlier than others. For example, I’m writing this at 1:15 in the morning!
Normally I begin writing as soon as I get out of bed. Writing in the morning seems to work best for me. It might be because my focus is better or it might simply be the coffee. If I awake with an idea, I’ll start writing straight away. If not, I’ll begin by editing what I wrote the previous day. I find it similar to stretching before a run. I write nearly every day. Normally, I write at home, but if the weather is nice I will travel to one of the local libraries to work. Good weather, especially in the summer, can be highly distracting. There are simply too many fun things to do, like going to the gym, golf, mowing the lawn. You get the picture.
2) If you could spend time with one of your characters, who would you choose and what would you do together?
I would choose Diane Joyner. Diane is the secondary protagonist in my series. She is intelligent, passionate, and dogged in her pursuit of the truth, but she tends to be a bit more social than John Byron. As for what we would do, I’d probably ask Diane what she felt like doing. It’s her day off after all.
3) What do you like to do when you’re not writing?
My two favorite activities are hiking through the mountains of New England, especially in the fall, and woodworking. I have hiked over a hundred miles of the Appalachian Trail. And I love building furniture from scratch. My grandfather was a master woodworker and I guess I caught the bug from him.
4) What type of research did you do for Beyond the Truth?
As with the first two novels in this series, Among the Shadows and Beneath the Depths, my research came from working as a police detective. I retired from the Portland, Maine police department as a detective sergeant after nearly three decades on the job. During my last few years I supervised the homicide and violent crime detectives. I combine real-world experience with a “what if” to create fictional stories set in and around the city of Portland. I still reach out to former colleagues whenever I have questions. There were several key things that I wanted to cover in Beyond the Truth. One of them was that I needed the perspective of a police officer involved in an actual shooting. Having investigated a number of police shootings, I had a good handle on that aspect. But I had never been the shooter and it was vital to the story to get that viewpoint right.
5) What is your favorite part of being an author?
I’d have to say the writing itself is my favorite part. Getting to spend time each day with the characters I’ve created is pretty cool. Watching the story unfold on the page is still a thrill for me. But meeting fans of the Detective Byron series is a close second. There’s nothing better than having people tell you that they can’t wait for the next book.
Thank you again for visiting Brooke Blogs! I know my readers will enjoy reading your answers as much as I will.
