Grandeur and opulence are everything in the famed New Orleans Garden District where pets are family and no bling is too big. Opening Furry Godmother, pet boutique and organic treat bakery, is Lacy Marie Crocker’s dream come true–until the glitter gun used to make her Shih Tzu tutus becomes a murder weapon. And Lacy becomes public enemy #1.

Now Detective Jack Oliver is hounding Lacy, and her Furry Godmother investor wants out before his name is tarnished by association. To make matters worse, a string of jewel heists with suspicious ties to the murder case has New Orleans residents on edge. To save her dream, Lacy must take a stand, put her keen eyes to work, and unravel what really happened at her shop that night. But can Lacy sniff out the killer cat burglar in time to get her tail-raising designs on the catwalk?

Inspiration in the Big Easy

I fell in love with New Orleans last summer when I went there on business. I did the usual tourist things, walking tours and Voo Doo dinners. I rode the ferry to Algiers and spent an evening aboard a steamboat on the Mighty Mississippi. I also spent several days in the numerous wonderful and captivating museums of the French Quarter learning about the city’s history, Mardi Gras traditions and the endless tragedies of Hurricane Katrina. The trip changed me.

And then I rode a streetcar to the Garden District.

I saw the most beautiful homes Like nothing my Midwestern eyes had ever seen, and the stories began to formulate. Photos don’t do the area justice, but I’m going to try.

The above is just one of so many fantastic beauties. I didn’t want to leave. I wanted to learn everything about this place immediately. So, I took a walking tour through the neighborhood and asked a ton of questions. I’m certain my guide wanted to muzzle me. The rest of my group probably had ideas about how to shut me up as well, but I couldn’t help myself. I was, and still am, in awe.

After the walking tour, I visited the cemetery. Unique above ground burial systems necessary to a town below sea level. They call them cities of the dead. You see why.

I worked up an appetite with all that walking and idea working, so I headed over to the most famous street in the district: Magazine Street.

I ate beignets and drank café au lait…

And I plotted a story about a woman from the area who tried to make it on her own elsewhere. Somewhere her parents’ money wouldn’t give her unfair advantages. Somewhere her successes would be her own. Unfortunately, a cheating ex-fiancé changed those plans, and she went home. To the New Orleans Garden District. Back home, she’d have to readjust after ten years on her own, making her own decisions and not worrying about appearances. She put her Yankee fashion degree to use and opened a boutique for pet couture and organic treats because combining her two loves was a lifelong dream, and she went for it

Overall, I had the time of my life, and I didn’t want to leave. The trip came to an end anyway, as all things must do, but I’m excited to have the Kitty Couture mysteries as a souvenir of my time there. As long as Lacy and her gang are making kitty couture and shih tzu tutus, I can revisit the Garden District anytime I’d like. I research new things about the neighborhood every day, and I live vicariously through my stories.

If you get the chance to visit New Orleans, I hope you’ll take the street car to the Garden District. Maybe it’ll change your life too. Maybe it will just be an incredible adventure for the scrapbook. Either way, I promise you won’t regret it.

My Thoughts on Cat Got Your Diamonds

Cat Got Your Diamonds by Julie Chase is the first book in the Kitty Couture mystery series. Lacy owns Furry Godmother, an upscale organic pet bakery and fashion boutique. When a man is found dead behind her store, and her fingerprints seem to be the only ones on the murder weapon, Lacy knows she has to figure out what happened. To save her reputation, her family name, and her shop. She is innocent, no matter what the good-looking detective on the case thinks.

I was immediately pulled into Cat Got Your Diamonds. I really liked Lacy. She’s smart and independent. I really liked her moments of sarcasm. They fit her character well and I laughed out loud reading a few times. The mystery unfolded at a fast pace and I didn’t want to put the book down until I finished reading. Lacy is an intelligent sleuth who doesn’t stop until she finds the truth. This is a wonderful start to a cozy series. The character development and relationships made me feel invested in the story and want to keep following the characters. I look forward to reading more in the series.

Be sure to add this fun mystery to your Goodreads and pick up your copy on Amazon today. If you like sassy sleuths and cozies with pets, Cat Got Your Diamonds by Julie Chase will be right up your alley.

  1. I am intrigued by this book. I have been to New Orleans before visiting friends so I am slightly aware of the city and some of the famous spots to see and do things. Really want to read this book.
