When Flora’s best friend returns to England with a Spanish film crew in tow, Flora is thrilled to land a job on set at a glamorous country house. But when a member of the crew is brutally murdered, and the priceless Infanta Tiara stolen, suspicion falls on everyone at Hanley Manor – including someone far too close to home.

When an arrest is made, Flora is plunged deep into a puzzling mystery, with no idea who she can and cannot trust. Surrounded by suspicion and bitter rivalries, she must keep one eye over her shoulder at all times. Because the murderer is about to strike again…

What I Do When I’m Not Being Creative

Even when I’m not writing I can still be found glued to my desk, working. I work as a freelance indexer, compiling back-of-the-book indexes for non-fiction books – a job I absolutely love. The rest of the time I’m a full-time mum and wife, looking after my beautiful seven-year-old daughter and keeping our house just about in some kind of order! Since having a family I’ve discovered that I’m a very tidy person. No one else in my household is, unfortunately. I’m not obsessively clean, or compulsively tidy, but I find it really difficult to relax if there is too much ‘clutter’ around. That’s not to say our house is immaculate – far from it! – but everything has a place, and when everything’s in its place I’m happy.

My weekdays are structured around school runs – in the day I get about five free hours, not including a brief stop for lunch. But as well as writing and promoting my books, and indexing, I need to fit in coffees with friends, visits with family, shopping, housework (!), and occasionally a bit of ‘me’ time. After school it’s reading and homework with my daughter, and by the time she’s gone to bed I’m usually too tired to do anything other than flop in front of the telly for an episode of Masterchef or Bargain Hunt (recorded from earlier in the day – how sad is that?).

Weekends we try to do stuff as a family. We like to go for walks and visit historic houses and gardens all year round. We live in a beautiful rural area, but it’s still good to get out and about – if only because I find it hard to stop working when we’re at home! I’ve always considered myself to be a person with only two speeds: flat out and stop. I can be both incredibly industrious and totally lazy – but not at the same time, of course.

Hobbies? Well, I do have a few. I love crocheting and quilting, and reading of course! I recently got into adult colouring books, which are incredibly therapeutic. Locally, there’s a craft group that meets once a month, and in the past year I’ve learned to make lampshades, French knot pictures, macramé jewellery and appliqué. For me though, nothing beats relaxing in a nice hot bubbly bath with a glass of wine, surrounded by candles and reading a good book, while my hubby cooks dinner and loads up the dishwasher. Pure bliss!

My Thoughts

Flora Lively and a Date with Death by Joanne Phillips is the second book in the Flora Lively British cozy mysteries series. I found it to be a quick read and an entertaining cozy. Flora is an interesting main character – I like that she’s not the ‘typical’ cozy mystery female sleuth. In this installment in the series, Flora finds herself caught up in another murder as well as a theft. There seemed to be no shortage of suspects in this book and Flora has a lot to work through.

I liked this charming cozy with some light romance elements. The English countryside setting is enjoyable. I recommend curling up with a cup of tea and Flora Lively and a Date with Death by Joanne Phillips for a fun afternoon of reading!
