Award-winning author Leigh Riker began her career with short stories then novels, and she still loves to write romance. When not writing, or thinking about writing, she likes to read, watch movies (funny or sad), dig in the garden, travel, and play the piano—with gusto if not finesse. At home in the Southeast she is (of course) working on a new novel.

guestpost
I’ve written three Harlequin Heartwarming novels— If I Loved You (July 2014), Man of the Family (July 2015) and Lost and Found Family (to be released in April 2016). I’m working now on the next one, tentatively titled Come-Again Cowboy.

I love writing for Heartwarming! And I’m grateful for the opportunity, which actually came as something of a surprise at first. I’d submitted a proposal to the new line a while ago then almost forgotten it when suddenly I got The Call. Harlequin wanted to buy If I Loved You. Of course I had other ideas too—and the rest is history.

This line of wholesome romances is refreshing for me as a writer because so many spicier books and alternative subgenres just don’t appeal to me anymore. From how well the line’s books are being received, I’d say many readers agree. I like it that Heartwarming has no lovemaking on scene (behind closed doors only, if at all), no rough language, and a generally “clean” yet realistic, emotional tone.

Whether each author’s stories are funny or sad or both, they all contain lots of emotion. Heartwarming gives me the chance to explore some deeper issues with fully-realized characters to love. And I get to work with an amazing group of publishing professionals. Thank you, all.

I hope you’ll enjoy my short story, “Her Thanksgiving Soldier,” in which a war-weary black-ops team member, Caleb Henderson, who first appeared in If I Loved You, has to choose ultimately between duty and love. With Daisy McCall.

Happy holiday!

She deserves a man she can count on

Eight years ago Brigham Collier broke their engagement, and Molly Darling’s heart, when he put the military first. Now Molly is a childless widow, and the returning soldier’s back in town…with the most adorable baby she’s ever seen. He needs help looking after Laila, left in his care by a fallen teammate. But time is running out. Who will keep Laila when duty calls again?

Molly can’t turn her back on an orphan, but Laila reawakens her longing for a family of her own. And her feelings for Brig. If he shared her dream—instead of living for the next dangerous mission—she might dare say yes to him again. But he’ll never leave his post, and she won’t trust him with her heart a second time.

  1. I just finished Leigh’s story. Very impressed with a whole story line in only sooo many pages, and even the secondary characters came alive – love the soldier and woman in the wheelchair.

    Great job, Leigh.
