Cordelia Davis lives with no regrets, despite her life changing drastically a half century ago when a tornado altered the destiny of the little Ozark town of Willow Lane. The town grew back stronger and more beautiful, and Cordelia, her sister, Pamela, and her best friend, Wanda, built a life to treasure.
As Willow Lane honors the memory of those lost and celebrates all that has been achieved, tragedy refuses to remain in the past. News of murder rocks the pastoral countryside when Cordelia discovers a body on her farm, beneath her beloved willow tree. And while the police make an immediate arrest, Cordelia finds herself untangling a web of lies and long-ago secrets.
With suspects in every nook of her cozy town—and an old flame knocking on her door—it will take all Cordelia’s tenacity to face the past and to weather the mysteries of Willow Lane.
Twister Sister Blog: A Different Kind of Cozy Mystery
I wanted to do something a little different with the Twister Sisters series. No, not reinventing the wheel, not coming up with something no one’s ever thought of before–writer’s might be a little self-aggrandizing at times, but I’m not that deluded to think that I’m going to invent the Internet of cozy mysteries or some such. So, maybe just a little different for me, and maybe just a little different from the other cozy series that I read and love. Hippie Wagon Homicide isn’t a huge shift in the cozy genre by any stretch, just a slightly varied way of telling a cozy mystery story. Since I write culinary cozy mysteries, let’s put it like this: It’s just a different take on a beloved recipe, a shifting around of exoctic ingredients, if you will.
Here’s what I kept, the list of all the things that I think, personally, are the most important aspects of a cozy mystery. Things that make it, by definition, cozy: * a large array of charming, lovable characters, * the picturesque, relatively small setting perfect for gossip and knowing everyone else’s business, * a mystery that is solved by the end of every book, *character development that continues to grow with each installment, and * a story that offers hope, escapism, and brightness. I also avoided the things that I think, personally, are not a cozy mystery: *gratuitous blood, *cursing, *sex. (Disclaimer: I read mysteries with all of those things, I could talk about the In Death series for weeks. However, not a cozy.)
My Twister Sister series, especially since I have a cast of ‘older’ main character in their mid-sixties (who decides when we hit that ‘older’ stage, anyway?), is more leisurely in pace, sinking into the story, the histories, and the nuance both of locale and characters. Sort of like a contemporary fiction novel woven together with a cozy mystery. The Twister Sister series has been a labor of love as I’ve planned it for years, literally. Writing it has been a joy, and now that it’s time to let it loose into the world, a lot of fear and loathing… no wait, not loathing, fear and nerves. As with anything that doesn’t follow the typical pattern or recipe, some readers won’t get it, some will hate it, but… some will love it, some… maybe… have been craving it.
This, in no way is saying that the Twister Sister series is better or more elevated than other cozy mysteries. I’m in the middle of writing the 24th installment of my Cozy Corgi series called Pesky Puppies, for crying out loud. Its cuteness overload, and I LOVE it! I also don’t plan on stopping writing the Cozy Corgi series anytime soon. It’s just that, I found myself wanting to write a different kind of cozy mystery and wanting to read a different kind of cozy mystery. Kind of like how milk chocolate brownies are absolute heaven, but throw in a few dark chocolate brownies into the basket and you’ve got heaven multiplied.
Honestly, I don’t know if my rambling about my new series made any sense to you at all, it might’ve scared you off, it might’ve intrigued you, or it might just make you shake your head and say… Mildred Abbott, stick to eating brownies. (If you were the last one, well then, buddy, I’ve got news for you. I will! I will eat all the brownies!) Whatever your reaction to my thoughts on this process of bringing my new series to life, I do hope you give it a try, just know that when you bite in, it won’t be the milk chocolate that you’re used to, so give yourself a second to get used to the dark chocolate flavor.
