Gareth Lowery smiled wide, making his emerald eyes glow in the matching room. He stared at Leah Tallent, sitting in her chair straight and tall, yet looking like she wanted to be anywhere but where she was. His beloved librarian was beyond private and had absolutely no interest in being interviewed.
“You look like you’ve seen a ghost…again.” His heart skipped a beat as he looked behind him quickly, wondering if their nemesis could’ve snuck up behind him.
Leah laughed. “Not today. So far Hitler, Crowley, Rasputin, Jack the Ripper – they’ve stayed away.” Her voice turned into a mumble, “Although I think I’d rather face the Devil, himself, than do this.”
“It’s just an interview.“
“And I take freedom of speech seriously,” Leah reminded him.
“This is true.” Taking a worried breath, he moved elegantly across the frayed carpet that looked like every actor, personality, and politician had once basked in the horrific fluorescent lighting above that seemed to turn every face into a creature from ‘The Walking Dead.’
“Maybe we should practice together before going out there,” he suggested. “You know…curb that sarcasm of yours a bit before revealing it on T.V.”
Leah waved her hand in the air. “Don’t worry. In a world of ‘Real Housewives’ and ‘Duck Dynasty’ there isn’t much I’m going to say that should shock people.”
Sitting across from her, Gareth leaned forward over the coffee table that’d seen better days, and stared into the sapphire eyes that he now knew he could never live without. “Let’s practice anyway, love.”
