Halloween brings more tricks than treats for costume shop owner Margo Tamblyn in the second in a new cozy series from the national bestselling author of the Material Witness Mysteries.
Halloween conjures up big business for Margo Tamblyn’s costume shop, Disguise DeLimit, but this year, the holiday comes knocking with serious trouble. Venture capitalist Paul Haverford plans to rezone historic downtown into a glitzy commercial area which would push out local business. Margo is set on saving her family’s store, especially after a nasty run-in with the chain-store tycoon, but after Haverford’s body is discovered during a spooky party at the derelict Alexandria Hotel, Margo finds herself dressed as the police’s prime suspect.
Anxious to clear her name, Margo begins hunting down anyone who might have wanted Haverford dead. Between all of his malicious maneuverings, the murdered mogul had buckets of people anxious to see him gone. Now, Margo will have to use every trick in the book to find a cloaked killer—before someone else winds up wearing a death shroud...
Masking for Trouble by Diane Vallere is the second book in the delightful Costume Shop Mystery series. In this installment, Margo is facing a hectic week at her family’s costume shop, Disguise DeLimit. It is the week leading up to Halloween, which is typically their biggest week. This year, a local big wig is funding the Halloween party, and he decides that only businesses on his payroll are eligible to provide things for the party…including costumes. This pushes out Disguise DeLimit and infuriates Margo.
When the big wig winds up dead, with Margo standing over his body, things get a bit hairy. Besides the murder mystery, there is also the business of the costume shop, and her secret relationship with Tak Hashiyomo. Margo is stretched to the limit. She has no choice but to try to find out who the killer is. Not only to clear her name, but also to keep Disguise DeLimit in a good light.
This is an awesome cozy mystery to read this time of year. I love the Halloween events and costumes throughout the book. The mystery iss very well-written. I feel like there were several viable suspects and had a hard time narrowing it down myself. Good thing I had Margo’s help. 😉 This is a series that I look forward to reading for a long time to come. Margo, Jerry, Ebony, Tak, Kirby, and Bobbie are great characters who feel like old friends. The setting of Proper City, Nevada is a unique departure from the cozies I usually read, which are often set in the Midwest or along the East Coast. I feel like this book is even better than the first in the series.
Masking for Trouble by Diane Vallere is a fast-paced, quirky mystery that will have you turning pages quicker than Margo Tamblyn changes costumes.
