Anna Graves’s whole life has recently been turned upside down. A new mother, she’s just gone back to her job as a radio presenter and is busy navigating a new schedule of late night feeding and early morning wake ups while also dealing with her newly separated husband. Then the worst happens. While Anna is walking on the beach with her daughter, she’s attacked by a crazed teenager. Terrified, Anna reacts instinctively to protect her baby.

But her life falls apart when the schoolboy dies from his injuries. The police believe Anna’s story, until the autopsy results reveal something more sinister. A frenzied media attack sends Anna into a spiral of self-doubt. Her precarious mental state is further threatened when she receives a chilling message from someone claiming to be the “Ophelia Killer,” a serial killer who preyed on the town twenty years ago—and who abruptly stopped when Anna’s father committed suicide.

Is Anna as innocent as she claims? And is murder forgivable, if committed to save your child’s life? Internationally bestselling author Tracy Buchanan takes readers on an emotional roller coaster ride filled with heart-stopping secrets and hairpin turns in No Turning Back, her US debut.

My writing sanctuary by Tracy Buchanan

Each morning, there’s nothing that gives me more joy then stepping into my beautiful study. It wasn’t always like that though. When we viewed our new house before putting in an offer, the room was filled floor to ceiling with books, files, boxes of clothes and more. The wallpaper was peeling, the carpet threadbare. But I could see through all that. I knew it would one day be the place I’d write my novels. So when we moved in, it was the first room I set about redecorating.

While my novels are mainly set in seaside locations, I like the darker side (as you’ll see in my latest novel No Turning Back!) and this carries through into my décor tastes. The first item I had to buy was a desk. I deliberated over it for ages but eventually came up with the walnut and black metal one.

Next came a whole wall dedicated to a beautiful forest scene. It makes me feel like I’m writing outside and not closed in by four walls.

I then splashed out on what I feel is a necessity for every writer: a chaise lounge! I tend to divide my time between my desk and chaise lounge, sitting upright at my desk in the morning, which is when I do a lot of admin stuff (replying to emails, finances, social media). Then in the afternoon, I put my feet up on the chaise lounge and delve into writing, my puppy Bronte squeezed in next to me. Above the chaise lounge is a floating bookshelf of all my books to remind me of what comes of hard work.

I like to have some visual prompts while writing too. I found a lovely ‘hanging’ board which I hang various pictures from and write the main questions posed in the novel I’m working on, essential for keeping me focused. It’s so easy when writing to go off on tangents. One of the most valuable pieces of advice an editor gave me was keep the focus tight. What is the main question and focus of your novel? Once you know, stick to it. So this board really helps.

A lot of the items in my room have been gifted to me by family and friends. The cushion on the chaise longue is from my brother and sister-in-law and I have a bookcase too which has been in my husband’s family for generations.

Another essential in any writer’s room is a bookcase. But it isn’t just useful for storing books, it’s also useful for what’s on top of it: a one-cup tea maker which dispenses hot water in less than a minute! My work colleagues got me this after I left my office job to become a full-time writer last summer. Tea is an essential part of any British writer’s day!

My Thoughts

No Turning Back by Tracy Buchanan is the perfect beach read. I instantly found myself so wound up in the story that I did not want to put it down. Ms. Buchanan kept the suspense going throughout. As a mother, I was able to easily relate to Anna’s consuming need to protect her child…but at what cost does Anna provide this protection? No Turning Back is fantastically written and I cannot wait to read other books by this author. If you enjoy psychological suspense and mystery books, this book will give you just what you’re looking for. So.Many.Twists!
