When technology fulfills every dream, reality becomes a nightmare.

Below the streets of New State, the undergrounders fight to remain free of the technological control of the world above. Every night, Yara risks her life fighting New State’s deadliest weapons, the drones. Half human and half machine, their living half tortured until everything human is gone, the drones have only one objective. Kill. And they do it with exacting precision.

Yara is good at her job and committed to her raids on New State. Until one of those raids brings her face-to-face with Joshua, a New State citizen who doesn’t quite fit her preconceived expectations. After a couple of awkward encounters, he shows her the meaning of hooking up—a computer simulation that allows people to live out their fantasies—without the complication of emotional entanglements or physical reality. But what Yara feels for Joshua is very real. And it’s punishable by law.

As she and Joshua grow closer, she convinces him to leave New State for her underground cause. But as the unrest between New State and the underground escalates, and the drones move in to destroy her world, nothing goes as planned. Families are arrested, loyalties are strained, and Yara’s forced to choose between her people and her feelings. The wrong choice could mean the end of her people, and reality could slip away-forever...

bookreview
Remote by Lisa Acerbo is a well-written blend of YA dystopian science fiction with a hint of romance. I was caught up in the story as soon as I started reading it. I didn’t realize how much time had passed (and that I was halfway through the book) until I looked at the clock. The author does a wonderful job of building an exciting world where two societies co-exist. One is completely dependent on government and the technology forced upon them by the government, and the other is a ‘rebel’ society on their own who refuse to be controlled by the New State government.

Yara was a strong female lead character. I liked that she stepped outside of the box and was her own person. Joshua was an awesome counterpart to Yara. He was sweet and clueless about some things, but incredibly intelligent in his own right. I really liked both of these characters and their separate lives that became intertwined.

This book impressed me. I only like YA Dystopian if the world building is done very well, and it definitely was in Remote by Lisa Acerbo. I don’t know for sure that there will be more books set in this world, but I hope so. I enjoyed reading it and would like to read more with Yara, Joshua, and the rest of the characters in Lisa’s created world.

  1. Great review, Brooke! This sounds like a great read and it’s my favorite genre, too! I love it when you read a book and you get so caught up in it that time flies by. I’m the same about this genre and the world building but it sounds like this one is very well written and complex!

  2. I recently discovered dystopian books and I am in awe of it, so when I saw Brookes blog giveaway I had enter and give it a try plus you gained another readership too.
