A Shadow on the Ground by Rebecca Lee Smith

Morgan Maguire is afraid to believe in second chances. The family orchard is failing, her twin brother is being framed for murder, and the sharks are circling. The tough exterior she’s spent years hiding behind is beginning to crumble, just as the man who shattered her heart is back in her life. Gage Kirkland is as compelling and magnetic as ever, and he’s offering the kind of help she may not be able to refuse. But can she trust him?

To finance his troubled son’s therapy, Gage, a former investigator, takes one last job–recovering a stolen Civil War artifact. Unfortunately, it’s in the possession of the woman he left behind, the woman who’s haunted his dreams ever since. The electricity between them still crackles, but unless he helps exonerate her brother and finds a way to confess his true reason for returning, how will he ever recover Morgan’s heart?

What are your future ambitions?
I want to keep writing, maybe dip into a slightly different genre. I’ve only published romantic suspense so far, but the book I’m working on now is more of a contemporary romance with a bit of mystery thrown in. Like all my books, it has a lot of humor. I’m published with a wonderful small press, The Wild Rose Press, but in the future, I’d like to get an agent and sell a book to one of the big five in New York or to Harlequin. Then hit the New York Times and USA Today bestseller lists. And while I’m dreaming BIG, I sure wouldn’t mind having a RITA award sitting on my desk. LOL

Who are your favorite authors?
Elizabeth Berg, Kristan Higgins, Jane Austen, Carrie Fisher, Nora Ephron. I love reading urban fantasy by Lilith Saintcrow and Devon Monk. But for pure, unadulterated, how-in-the-hell-did-she-think-of-that mystery, I still go back to Dame Agatha. I mean, how many of us can read an Agatha Christie novel and guess the ending?

What song would you choose for Karaoke?
“Moondance.” I was at a karaoke bar once where a man began singing “Piano Man” by Billy Joel. He wasn’t very good, but the whole bar and restaurant chimed in and sang along with him. It was one of those moments that makes you glad you were there to experience it.

Which Star Trek or Star Wars character are you most like?
In Star Trek: The Next Generation, I would like to think I’m most like Guinan, the wise bartender played by Whoopi Goldberg, but I think I’m probably more like Commander Deanna Troi’s eccentric mother, Lwaxana, played by Majel Barrett. Maybe that’s wishful thinking, too, because she always cracked me up. Although, I would never show up nude for my own wedding. LOL

About the Author

AuthorPicRebecca lives with her husband in the beautiful, misty mountains of East Tennessee, where the people are charming, soulful, and just a little bit crazy. She’s been everything from a tax collector to a stay-at-home mom to a house painter to a professional actress and director. When she’s not churning out sensual romantic mysteries with snappy dialogue and happy endings, she likes to travel, go to the Outer Banks for her ocean fix, watch old movies, hang out at the local pub, and make her day complete by correctly answering the Final Jeopardy! question.
