The legendary Native American Spirit Woman and her mountain lion companion, said to appear in times of trouble, are once again sighted near Lockleer Mountain. And there is trouble aplenty.

Twenty-four hours after Joe and his brother, Cyrus, quarrel over the ownership of a winning million dollar lottery ticket, Cyrus’s mutilated body is found in the mountains, ravaged by the local wildlife. Sheriff Peabody and Deputy Nate Darling are soon puzzled by stolen VA hospital drugs found in Cyrus’s bedroom. It seems likely the suspected homicide is either connected to the contested lottery ticket or the drugs.

Hearing of the crowds that inevitably follow such a disturbing event, Rosita Ramirez, a transient with two children, comes to Lockleer Mountain to sell homemade tamales. She is befriended by Nate’s fiancé, Lou Shoemaker, owner of the Pooper Scooper sewer disposal truck. Rosita parks her old motorhome at the First Baptist Church and Lou aids her in acquiring employment at the local diner.

Soon, malicious gossip erupts about Rosita and the pastor. The church deacons are divided between ignoring unproven gossip, versus concern the gossip will divide the congregation and affect the future of the church.

In addition to finding a killer, Sheriff Peabody and his deputies are now tasked with exposing the perpetrator of the gossip, or the pastor will be forced to leave. How can the Spirit Woman and her companions bring about a solution to the troubles that plague the rural community?

A Reader’s Expectations

Elaine Faber

A reader spends four to six hours, immersed in reading a book. If the story is well written, for a time, she forgets her personal life. She travels alongside the main character or, if the writer is truly talented, the reader feels as though she ‘becomes’ the main character.

Readers choose their genre for various reasons. She may immerse herself in a seedy romance where she feels loved and cherished. She may be a frustrated crime fighter who enjoys following clues and solving the crime. She may wish to experience the adrenaline rush, thrills and chills of a thriller-suspense novel. Perhaps she is curious about what life would be like in a future universe, or living in a different time from history. She may hope to learn the traditions of people from other cultures through the pages of a fictionalize adventure set in foreign lands. She may wish to forget her own troubles for a few short hours and laugh a little in a humorous fantasy.

A reader likely seldom wonders what goes into the creation of a novel. What was involved before this story could magically transport them to their chosen destination?

Over many hours, weeks, months, and sometimes years, an author must imagine the premise for the novel. Some authors outline the entire story before they put fingers to keyboard. Others have a general idea of the story line, and let the story evolve as they write, diligently bringing every thread together at the end. She must keep each reaction and comment true to the personality of the characters through actions and dialogue. Understandably, a fair amount of talent, study, and craft skill goes into this.

The end of the story must reach a satisfying conclusion. Add editing, critique by others, formatting, cover design, and decisions regarding publication, whether traditional or Indie Publishing. What a challenge and what a victory when a reader comes back to the author and asks, “When is the next book coming out?” That is an author’s highest compliment.

Spirit Woman Legends and Lies is the second in a series. In my imaginary world, a Native American Kachina spirit woman assists a small town following a grisly murder, drugs stolen from the local veteran’s hospital, and salacious gossip threatening the local Baptist preacher. Is the woman sighted in the woods real or imaginary?

In this cozy mystery adventure, you will join Lou Shoemaker, the owner of a local sewer disposal truck, and her fiancé, Deputy Nate Darling as they follow the clues that lead to two more suspicious deaths. Is there a ruthless killer hiding in plain sight in this small mountainous town of ordinary folks? Can the sheriff and Deputy Nate flush out the killer before he kills again? And, if the Spirit Woman and her mountain lion companion are real, how can they aid the troubled community?

#5 Michael Boggia
5.0 out of 5 stars Real life drama with a spectral touch that will keep you turning the pages.

This story takes me back to the area and small town I knew as a child. There are always legends and mysteries whispered about spirits and mysterious happenings told by the “old folks” to tease a kid’s imagination. The characters are realistic, the descriptions of Lockleer Mountain stir memories of home. Even the ghostly cougar. If you want to leave the hectic world for a while, read this wonderful story with down home charm as well as a mystery that keeps you turning the pages.
