Scott James’ Biography
The biography on Dr. Scott James is not pretty. Accused of terrorism and murder, his life is a struggle for survival—a series of adventures that sometimes help him and sometimes doom him.
In the first book, The Missile Game, Scott James is a plastic surgeon going about his life. He’s a guy who “fixes people’s faces.” But a chance encounter with a money-laundering scheme leads him to discover a hidden missile base in an abandoned farmhouse. The terrorist organization responsible for the chaos in the first book returns for the second of the series, The Zombie Game. This book takes Dr. James to the inner workings of the Vodoun societies in Haiti, where zombies are created through the use of psychotropic drugs. In the third volume of the series, The Ebola Game, the good doctor becomes involved in a conspiracy to build a biological weapons lab on a remote island.
If you detect some of the flavor of the James Bond vs Spectre set-up throughout the entire 007 series—there is some of that, definitely. You’ll also probably notice that there is a nod to the terrific television series and movie of the same name, The Fugitive. Both the series and the movie are about a doctor who has been falsely accused of murder and who is now on the run.
Keep in mind, these influences are just flavors. I’ve also tried to make the life of Scott James, and his love, the mysterious Elizabeth Keyes, at times, very real.
Perhaps the best way to quickly provide an accurate biography for Dr. James would be to simply use his own description: “There are people and powers who are playing games with my life.”
Read an excerpt:
Glenn Shepard’s first novel, Surge, was written while he was still a surgical resident at Vanderbilt. In the following years he wrote The Hart Virus, a one-thousand-page epic about the AIDS crisis, as well as three other novels. In 2012, he created “Dr. Scott James,” his Fugitive-like action-hero, and began publishing a series. The first volume of the Dr. Scott James series was The Missile Game, followed shortly afterward by The Zombie Game. The third of the series, The Ebola Game, is due out in December, 2015. Though the books contain many of the same characters, they don’t have to be read in order. Each can be read as a stand-alone.
